Strong-willed, successful and determined, Callan Matthews lives the facade of a happy, wonderful life. Unfortunately, unbridled chaos runs amuck in the deep, dark places of her heart as she struggles to keep herself together. Her once beloved husband, Clay, tugs relentlessly at the last few threads keeping her from completely unraveling. His laid-back attitude only serves to drive her further away instead of drawing her back into his arms.

Easy-going cowboy Clay Matthews is a respected college professor. He's the man family and friends turn to for help, or when they need a good laugh, since he's a huge tease and practical joker. Life would be almost perfect, except for his relationship with his wife. Clay is completely baffled by Callan. He thought he knew everything there was to know about this woman but she's turned into a mystifying female he barely understands. He'd give just about anything to recapture the feelings they used to share, but she seems to want no part of it.

Just when he decides to get to the root of the problem no matter the outcome, he discovers a secret she kept from him that's too painful to bear and too big to forgive. Will their love be strong enough to withstand a revelation that could rock the foundation of their marriage?

Heart of Clay The Women of Tenacity Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Shanna Hatfield Laurel Schroeder Books

This book is a lovely, passionate (without being uncomfortable or graphic) story of a couple who overcome many real life struggles. The first half of the book is full of emotional struggles as Callan & Clay work through past mistakes & regrets.

I especially loved her characters because her descriptions of Clay reminded me often of my own husband some physically & many personality-wise and her descriptions of Callan just made me want to help her see how wonderful she was.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Then just as you feel a deep sense of satisfaction because they triumph over past problems, Clay has an accident. At this point I almost stopped reading the book because of the intense pain I experienced as I thought Callan had lost her husband. This was quite possibly more difficult for me than many readers because I really did lose my beloved husband several years ago. I almost closed the book because I didn’t think I could bear reading a book of losing a spouse and then finding love with someone else. I really struggle with those kinds of books because of my own personal feelings toward my husband & my belief that death is not the end of marriage. I kept thinking, “She can’t lose him! This would be a horrid book if she loses him!” Thankfully, although it gave heart wrenching moment after moment through that portion of the story, she did not lose him!

***END OF SPOILER***

The struggles through the last half of the book or so were different because you don’t get the feelings of a fragile relationship. You know their love will get them through it all.

Thank you to the author for writing this clean yet passionate story of believable characters with believable challenges!

Heart of Clay The Women of Tenacity Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Shanna Hatfield Laurel Schroeder Books Reviews

FINALLY. Finally a good book that had wonderfully developed characters, a beautiful storyline, and not so much unnecessary drama that I wanted to bash my head into a wall. I absolutely loved this entire story. Callan was very annoying to me at first, but she grew on me as she changed. And what woman wouldn't love Clay? Such a beautiful story. The only thing that could make it better would be if they had some kiddos of their own, even if they were adopted. Thank you for this refreshing and amazing story.
This book was absolutely awesome!!!! I work fulltime and barely have time to clean house much less read for pleasure…however I made time to read this book and can't wait to read the others in the series… very clean romance!!!!!! Loved it…gotta go "Not His Type" awaits me!!!!!
Life is not always easy and neither is marriage, but you can overcome the obstacles that come your way. Shanna Hatfield shows us that in Heart of Clay. I enjoyed the trips down memory lane in her story and discovering how Clay and Callan fell in love, and then watching them rekindle their love and work on saving their marriage even in the midst of some pretty intense trials. By the end of the book, they had not only successfully rekindled their love, but had fallen even more deeply in love with each other and were stronger because of the troubles they had faced and overcome. Both Clay and Callan went through a transforming process as they saw the areas where they themselves had messed up and they worked on those areas. Neither was completely innocent in how their marriage had gotten to the tough spot it was in; and though they could have thrown the towel in and given up, they didn’t. Through some surprising events, they each realized just how much their marriage and their love was really worth to them and they started to work their way back to each other. Marriage takes solid commitment, and at times, hard work to keep it going. It takes openness and honesty and not giving up. Shanna does a wonderful job of showing how important these things are in marriage and where it can begin to lead if you don’t do them. She also offers hope that things can change. Heart of Clay is a wonderful story dealing with real life situations and full of characters you can’t help but fall in love with and root for. I highly recommend it!
Although the author is one of my favorite contemporary authors, I have to grudgingly admit I didn't enjoy this one too much.

I found the author's over-use of the physical descriptions of both the hero and heroine finally tiring and unnecessary.

Without delving into spoilers I found it rather a stretch that the heroine hid one of the most traumatic events in her life from her husband especially since it intimately involved them both! (This same event occurred in our own married life and I personally cannot imagine sharing and supporting my spouse)

I skimmed much of the latter part of the book because it seemingly contained a lot of what I would describe as 'fluff' that did not add a great deal to the story line.

The ending to the story was also suspect in that the hero secretly planned an extravagant event right under the nose of his wife without her being aware of it, especially since she was in the event-planning profession herself. It undermined the previously intelligent, savvy and highly aware personality of the heroine making her seem suddenly clueless and naïve.

Finally, I kept anticipating a child for them which never materialized, a final disappointment.

After all of this, the author is STILL one of my favorite contemporary authors. In light of the fact that Heart of Clay has received multiple 5 star reviews makes it a desirable read. Simply because it did not mesh with my peculiar sensibilities does not make it a bad read.
